WLAX secures first America East crown with 14-3 win over Albany...draws Towson in the NCAA first round

Senior Janine Hillier scored six points on three goals and three assists to lead the No. 10/7 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team to a 14-3 win over Albany for its first-ever America East Championship title.

After hoisting the America East Championship trophy for the first time in program history earlier today, the No. 10/7 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team was picked to play Towson in the first round of the NCAA Tournament May 10. Game time set for 7 p.m.,  the NCAA announced on a selection show on NCAA.com.
Stony Brook (16-2) clinched its first-ever NCAA berth with a resounding 14-3 win over rival Albany in the America East Championship title game at LaValle Stadium. The 11-goal win was the largest in tournament history, and the seven total goals the Seawolves allowed during the tournament were a conference championship record. Janine Hillier record six points en route to being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while Tewaaraton nominee and conference Player of the Year Demmianne Cook netted three and controlled five draws.
The Seawolves are enjoying another historic season under second-year head coach Joe Spallina, who has engineered a meteoric rise to national prominence. SBU has spent the entire season ranked in both major national polls and has cracked the top 10 for the first time in program history. The squad's 16 wins and 287 goals surpass last year's marks of 14 and 273, respectively, and its 11-straight wins are also a program record. Stony Brook also won its first-ever outright America East regular season title by going undefeated in conference play.
SBU's high-flying, second-ranked scoring offense is paced by Cook, an elite senior midfielder who has tallied an NCAA-best 86 goals this season and school-record 154 for her career at Stony Brook, which began last season. Cook also leads the nation in goals per game and is in the nation's top 10 in both points and points per game. The two-way player also leads the team in draw controls (91), ground balls (36) and caused turnovers (25) and entered the week ranked 13th in the country in draw controls per contest.

Claire Petersen and Hillier complete the prolific trio of senior offensive threats for Stony Brook. Hillier is second on the team in points and goals with 72 and 47, respectively, while Petersen has dished out a team-high 42 helpers.  She is in the top 10 nationally in points and assists per game.

Junior goalie Frankie Caridi has sparkled in net, anchoring a Seawolves defense that has posted a nation-low goals against average (GAA) of 5.33.
A pair of sophomores with bright futures at SBU in Amber Kupres and Michelle Rubino rank third and fourth on the team in goals with 33 and 28, respectively. Rubino's speed and athleticism has also helped her tally 51 draw controls, which rank second on the team behind Cook.
Towson (10-8) won the Colonial Athletic Association for the second-straight year, defeating Hofstra 9-3, to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament. The winner of the Stony Brook-Towson game will take on No. 1 overall seed Maryland on Sunday, May 12 at noon.
